Blessed Are the Spiritually Hungry
A person suffering from starvation or dehydration can think of nothing else but to find food or water. Hunger and thirst are God-given sensations that help us survive physically. In the same way, spiritual hunger and thirst for righteousness help us survive spiritually. God gave us an inner longing, a deep desire for fulfillment. He gave us a spiritual hunger at the core of our being.
Unfortunately, many take this hunger and aim it at other things. Some hunger for power; some hunger for pleasure; some hunger for possession. Even within the church, we feed ourselves with things other than God’s righteousness. But if we sate our spiritual appetite on church activities or our own Christian reputation, we will die of spiritual starvation. Nothing will fully satisfy but Jesus and His righteousness.
Finding true satisfaction means recognizing that our own righteousness is not going to cut it. It means turning to God for His righteousness, which He gives to us through Christ. We will be satisfied when we continue to hunger and thirst for God, for His holiness, for what is pleasing to Him, by the power of His Spirit. For as we do, we will be filled with peace and thanksgiving and goodness and mercy that no one and nothing can take away.
Prayer: Lord, help me to seek spiritual fulfillment through Your righteousness. I want to long for holiness and to see it manifested in my life. I know that true satisfaction is found in holiness because You are holy—worthy and beautiful. Make me more like You, Lord. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” Matthew 5:6).
