Explore the Names of God
God chose names for Himself that reflect His character, His personality, and His identity. They are not a human invention, but a composite of His nature, His sovereignty, and His desires. His names are, in a very real sense, a gift to us so that we might begin to comprehend His greatness.
We must not take our adoption as God’s children for granted. We are heirs—reflections of our heavenly Father (see Galatians 4:6-7). We must be ever aware of how privileged we are to be called sons and daughters of the Most High God.
As you learn the meanings behind the names of God, you will realize that there is great power in His name. Are you in the middle of a battle or struggle now? Call upon the name of God. Psalm 124:8 tells us, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” He is our strength, our shepherd, the great I am. He is with us now and has already given us the victory.
If you want to know God and grow in your relationship with Him, learn about His names. Use them in your prayer time. Meditate on what each name means for God’s character. As you learn His names—Yahweh, Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Kapha, Jehovah Nissi, Jehovah Mekaddish, Jehovah Shalom, and more—pray that God will open your eyes to better understand His personality and character.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to us in Your names. I pray I would learn Your names and grow into a better understanding of who You are. I love you. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens” (Psalm 148:13).
