Human Sacrifices
We read about human sacrifices in the Bible. In Deuteronomy 12:31 (ESV), the LORD warns that the Canaanites were involved in the practice: "You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the LORD hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods." And in Psalm 106:37-38 (ESV): "They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood."
Believe it or not, this practice is still taking place in some tribes in Africa. On today's Footsteps, TWR-Africa's Anthony Barkhuizen reads a listener testimony about the reality of human sacrifice. As you listen to the program, I hope you'll dwell on this thought: Jesus, who was fully God, who was perfect in every way, who was completely without sin, sacrificed Himself to pay the penalty for our sin--"as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself" (Hebrews 9:26b, ESV). Jesus' sacrifical death on the cross is the only human sacrifice that matters.
