It's quite common to see "John 3:16" on handwritten signs at football games and on billboards by the side of the road.  It's probably the most commonly quoted verse in the Bible.  Many of us can still recite it from the King James Version of the Bible:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
