Authenticity and Prayer
Have you ever engaged in a debate with a nonbeliever about the Christian faith? From my experience, even if I put forward some excellent points, I don't think I've ever swayed my "opponent" into a belief in Jesus. Honestly and biblically, I don't think we can ever argue anyone into the Kingdom. While we are Christ's "ambassadors" and God does make "his appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5:20, ESV), and while we are told to always be prepared "to make a defense to anyone who asks" us about our hope in Jesus (1 Peter 3:15, ESV), ultimately, salvation comes through the work of the Holy Spirit, through the power of Scripture, and by the grace of God. Remember, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8, ESV). So, what is our responsibility in leading others to Christ? Obviously, we have to be willing to share our faith. Again, we are Christ's amabassadors. And as we talk with someone about Jesus, we should use Scripture. It's more powerful than any of our persuasive words or arguments. Finally, as Tim Whitehead of Galcom International-Canada points out on today's Footsteps, our conversation has "to be authentic and real ... you have to pray. People aren't going to come to Christ through argument. They're going to come to Christ through the Holy Spirit working." For more, listen to today's program!
