Marathon
In the early days of the American Civil War, many soldiers and citizens in both the North and South believed that the war would end quickly. In fact, some residents of Washington, D.C., including several United States senators, packed picnic baskets and traveled by buggy to watch the first major battle--the First Battle of Bull Run (or First Manassas). They expected a swift, decisive, one-battle victory for the Union. Instead, they experienced a rude awakening, and the war dragged on for four bloody years.
In our present day, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is similar. The Russian Army had plans of invading Ukraine and taking control of the country very quickly. They didn't plan on the heavy and determined resistance of the Ukrainian people. As a result, day after day, the fighting continues. As TWR President Lauren Libby explains on today's Footsteps, the war in Ukraine "is not so much a sprint as a marathon." Like many other major wars, "this could stretch on for years."
So, what is the responsibility of a Christian media ministry like TWR? In this time of crisis, we must continue to spread the Good News of Jesus to both the people of Ukraine and Russia. Please pray for our efforts. Thanks!
