The Poor, the Destitute, and the Desperate
In Jesus' parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14:15-24, ESV), when the invited guests make excuses as to why they can't attend the banquet, "the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame'" (v. 21) ... "that my house may be filled" (v. 23). No one was to be excluded from the table. This approach applies to us as well. As Christians, Jesus instructs us to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19, ESV). Our Lord calls us to carry the gospel everywhere--"to the highways and hedges" (v. 23) as the master in this parable commands.
On today's Footsteps, Gregg Harris of Thru the Bible expresses his thoughts on this very subject. He expresses, "God often goes to the poor and the destitute and the desperate, and we want to be there for them with the Word of God." That desire drives the ministries of both Thru the Bible and TWR, but it shouldn't start and stop with Christian media organizations. Truly, all believers in Jesus should have this same heart for evangelism. Let's all share Jesus' invitation of salvation with everyone.
