Giving the Next Generation to God
The power of an arrow lies in its speed. Its target doesn’t often see the attack coming. Arrows whizz by without warning in the thick of the fight. And in the hands of the right archer, they are deadly.
Psalm 127:4-5 says, “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.” Arrows are weapons of attack—offensive rather than defensive. Yet, when it comes to our children, too often we go on the defense.
There’s nothing wrong with a good defensive strategy. We’ll need one if we are to protect the next generation from the snares of the enemy. But God wants our children to go on the offensive—to become warriors for Him and to take new ground for the Kingdom of God.
God has given us the next generation so that we might turn around and give those young people right back to Him. In His hands, those arrows are a force to be reckoned with, for He is the master archer. But it is our job to train up our children in the faith so that, when God calls them, they will be ready and willing to serve Him.
Prayer: Lord God, use me to equip the next generation, that they might be warriors for You. Help me to faithfully train and disciple those whom You have placed in my care. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6).
