Shame, Mistrust, and Fear
"Guilt comes from within. Shame comes from without."(1) That's the perspective of pastor and author Voddie Baucham, and I think today's Footsteps guest, Dan Hatfield of Nations One, would agree. On today's program, Dan talks about the approach that Nations One uses in ministering to the First Nations people of Canada. Dan maintains that "the root of the problem" for many First Nations people is "shame and mistrust and fear." History clearly testifies that these native Americans have been treated very poorly by the white man causing "mistrust and fear." So, when white ministers from the outside go into native communities and try to shame the people into repenting of their sins, the end result is often disaster. Dan explains how Nations One uses a different strategy. First, they use native people to share the Gospel with other native people. Immediately, there is a trust factor. Second, at the heart of their message is the fact that "Jesus came to set you free." And for the First Nations people of Canada, that method of ministry is certainly more effective!
Keep these words of Jesus in mind as you listen to today's episode:
"If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31b-32, ESV)
