Sheep without a Shepherd
The news is filled with stories concerning the border between the United States and Mexico. When you see those images of thousands of immigrants crossing the border, what's your reaction? As for Pete Walker, he saw "foreigners, destitute, poor, scared, helpless and harassed, sheep without a shepherd." So, he traveled to Yuma, Arizona "to encounter these people with the message of Jesus." On today's Footsteps, Pete tells about his trip to the border. As you listen to the program, keep this passage in mind:
"And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'" (Matthew 9:35-38, ESV)
After my interview with Pete, and after reading these verses, I have to ask myself, "Andy, do you truly have 'compassion' for these people?" Maybe you need to ask yourself that question too.
