Leave Them Alone
On today's Footsteps, Tom Schoen takes us back to the 1960s when his parents were first carrying the Gospel to the Wayana and Trio tribes in the South American jungles of Suriname. Not surprisingly, some anthropologists advised, "Leave 'em alone. They're happy the way they are." But Tom's family didn't leave them alone. The Schoens were compelled by God to introduce these unreached people groups to Jesus. You can learn more about the Schoen family's missionary experiences when you watch the TWR film LIFTED.
But before you leave, let's go back to this secular concern about Christian evangelism. Simply put, many nonbelievers don't want to see the spread of Christianity. They don't want to hear about Jesus, and they don't want us telling anyone else about our Savior. They say we should be "tolerant" of everyone's personal beliefs. "Just leave 'em alone." But as geniune believers in Jesus, we can't leave the world alone. We've been given a mandate by Jesus to "Go ... and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20a, ESV). Why does Jesus give us this global task? Because "there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12, ESV). The bottom line is the eternal destination of their souls--Heaven or Hell. We MUST tell the world about Jesus!
