Church History - Episode 46: Crazy Stuff! | Pastor Lance Ralston
Part 46 of our Church History series! In this video, Pastor Lance Ralston delves into a turbulent, crazy time in Christian history! We look at the life and works of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite; such as "The Mystical Theology,” "The Celestial Hierarchy," "The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy," and "The Divine Names," which lay out his synthesis of Christianity & Neoplatonism, and his "apophatic" theology. His influence on the Monophysite Christians of Alexandria, Pope Gregory I and the Lateran Council, and later mystics and monks such as John Scotus Eriugena, Thomas Aquinas, and Meister Eckhart is explored, as well as the torch-bearers such as the Paulicians. Join us for this wild ride through a theological side quest! Let us know in the comments! Is Modern Christianity Something? LIVE Q&A, Dec 5 w/ David Guzik
Welcome to the weekly live Q&A with Pastor David Guzik, author of the Enduring Word Bible commentary. After our lead question, Pastor David takes questions via the live chat - simply add your questions & our moderator will arrange & deliver them to Pastor David according to theme or subject! This week, Pastor David's lead question, "Is Modern Christianity Missing Something?' comes from Fiona W., who writes: "Hi Pastor Guzik, my name is Fiona. I've been thinking a lot lately about the state of modern Christianity, and I wonder if we're missing something important. It seems like many churches today focus a lot on comfort and personal success, but I’m not sure if we're really digging into what the Bible says about true discipleship and sacrifice. Do you think modern Christianity has lost something essential in its pursuit of culture and convenience? What should the church be doing differently, or what do you see missing from (or overemphasized in) the Christian culture at large?" What's changed which has made loving others more complicated & challenging? 17:45 In Matt 22v11-14, there was a man at the wedding feast who didn’t have on a wedding garment and was cast into darkness. Is this a picture of the marriage supper of the lamb (Rev 19)? If so, how did he get there, and why didn’t he have on a wedding garment? 20:20 How is it that some of my Roman Catholic friends claim that the Catholic Church is the only true legitimate church, and all Protestants (especially Evangelists) are missing EVERYTHING? Is the denominational unification of the Church important to God? 23:53 Is worship the sacrificing of self/picking up our cross daily because we know we are in a restored relationship with God through Jesus, or is it how we sing & what we sing? 27:27 If I have doubts about someone being deceived by the devil, how do I know? If it is true, what should I do as a pastor? 29:40 My church sees 3-10 visitors every week but less than 10% of them stay long term. Given your extensive experience, what could be wrong, and what can be done to remedy it? 35:35 How should we respond biblically when leadership seems hesitant to take action against spiritual abuse within our church? 39:03 How can a Christian Husband Love his Wife the way Christ loves the Church? Can you make that practical, able to be implemented? 42:33 Why was Shechem singled out amongst all the men to be called “honorable” in Genesis 34v19? Since his actions towards Dinah were anything but honorable. 47:00 I find it a "turn off" when I see a book/gift store in the lobby of a church. Am I being overly picky? 49:04 How can we tell if a worship song is touching our spirit and not emotions? If we are worshipping in spirit or if we’re being emotional to the song 53:28 I struggle with some of the vague terms we use like the word "rest" in Hebrews. I understand remaining faithful to the original text when translating, but is there a more concrete term for that? 56:40 If Pastors should only be men, can a woman be a Bible teacher in a class at a Christian college with both men and women? Or a conference setting that may or may not be in a church building. 57:35 We have 5 church services each week. How many church services are enough practically? 58:50 I am a medical personnel with many LGBT patients. I mix with them a lot to help them medically. Is it ok to continue mingling with them to help them? 59:40 In Romania, a communist Pro-Russian/Anti-occidental New-Age man is about to become President. How do I cope with knowing my whole church voted for him? 1:00:55 Are there different kinds of faith, such as trusting in Jesus, God, and the Lord? Are they different expressions of faith, or all the same? 1:01:33 Do you think people in the old testament were Born-Again? 1:02:50 What do you think of home churches? 1:03:53 “What God has joined together, let no one separate.” Does that mean there are marriages “God did not join”? 1:04:24 I’m planning on Getting a CSB Charles Spurgeon study Bible. Have any thoughts on the CSB? I usually study from NJKV Bible! 1:05:30 Can y'all include a Pastor David Guzik bobblehead for anyone who preorders his new Study Bible? That would be awesome! #biblestudy #christianity #jesus #bible #christian #pastor
