Looking at Exodus 17, Numbers 20 and II Samuel, Gideon Levytam points to the eleventh prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures concerning the promise of the coming Messiah. The children of Israel were led by God as they travelled to the promised land of Canaan, yet, because of the difficult journey and their dissatisfied hearts, they contended against God and His servant Moses. In Exodus 17:2a, the people contended with Moses to give them water, Moses replied, why do you contend with me, why do you tempt the LORD? Exodus 17:2b. The LORD met the needs of His people, and quenched their thirst by smiting the Rock, and providing them with water. David called that smitten Rock, the God of Jacob, the Rock of Israel (צוּר יִשְׂרָאֵל). That Rock is Israel's promised Messiah, Yeshua / Jesus who was smitten for the sin of the World. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:4, "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."
