In episode 20 of Church History, Pastor Lance focuses in on two influential 4th century church leaders touched on previously: Jerome, author of the Latin Vulgate, and John Chrysostom, who provoked and positioned himself against the Roman Empire as bishop in its new capital of Constantinople. The origins and achievements of these major figures in church history are chronicled, as well as the important events and ideas that arose around them. From Jerome's beginnings as a desert hermit, to his commentaries, translation work, polemics, and challenge to the Pelagians; from Chrysostom's start as a monk to his time in Antioch during the Affair of the Statues, and his outspoken opposition to Roman culture, elites, and imperial leaders like Arcadius and Eudoxia, which led to his many exiles. Their biographies are firmly rooted in the tumultuous age in which they prospered.
