Chapter 4: “This is What God Says”

Joshua and the Neighbour’s Ruse
"We can be crafty too," the king of the Hivites said. They had put old sacks on their donkeys' back and old leather wineskins, cracked and torn and tied together with string. The sandals on their feet were falling apart. Their clothes were tattered and torn. And you should have seen the food they carried in their bags - dry old bread, and mouldy crumbs. And you should have seen their donkeys, the oldest and scrawniest. This pathetic tableau arrived at the Israelite camp in Gilgal - crafty men determined to trick Joshua.
