I think it is instructive to look at a few of the major dividing principles that exist in our culture today. The divide seems to have some deeply philosophic and religious bases.

What are the “root views” that are at the bottom of political differences?

Liberal/Progressive

Conservative

Government fixes our problems

Government lets us be responsible

Our problems are external to us

Our problems are internal to us

Man’s goodness is normal

Man’s sin is normal

The Bible cannot really be believed

The Bible is to be believed

Nature made us through evolution

God created us

Nature is “effectively” God

God created all nature for His purposes

Do you see how foundational creation vs. evolution can be? It not only affects our view of God, it affects our view about the Bible, and therefore about the nature of man. If the Bible cannot be believed because evolution trumps it as the truth, then sin is not the problem and we should all agree with secular liberal progressives when they say that what we need is more government involvement and more “education.”

Many Christians think of evolution simply as a scientific theory which should be accommodated. But in our view, atheistic evolution is actually a terrible lie about God and His involvement with His creation. It is even capable of tearing our nation apart!
