Created for Love and Intimacy
My wife, Susan, was leaving the house and already out the door when I called out to her, “When will I see you again?” And she called back, “What?!”
So I thought I’d be cute and follow up with the next phrase from the old pop song When Will I See You Again, and called to her a little louder, “When will we share precious moments?!” And she laughed and got in the car. (There’s a joke that says, “50% of conversation in marriage is saying “What?” from the next room”.)
Indeed, the Bible teaches that marriage, the love between husband and wife, is a reflection of and analogous to the love relationship that we have, or should have, with the Lord! It is the “mega mystery” of Ephesians 5:32 which sets up the whole purpose of God in Creation. We are His special creation; made in His image - with the freedom to love Him or not. And He is calling out His Church, His people, into a love relationship now in this present age, and in which we are being prepared to experience in greater fullness in the eternal age to come!
As “the bride of Christ”, we are being courted by the Lord, who is “the Bridegroom”. And as the earthly reflection of the heavenly truth in marriage presents it, “…they two shall be one flesh. This is a great (huge, “mega”) mystery; but I speak concerning Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:31-32). We are awaiting the “Hallelujah Chorus” of Revelation 19:6, ahead of the marriage of the Lamb in Revelation 19:7 to His betrothed, the Church!
So, we are a bride with a bridegroom who loves and cherishes us beyond belief. Don’t you know that He truly wants those “precious moments” with you? He asks, like the songwriter above, “When will I see you again? ... When will we share precious moments? … Are we in love, or just friends?”
Since our Creator made us in His image, and since we have a strong desire and drive for intimacy, isn’t it evident that He has a desire for intimacy with us? One that makes our desire for human intimacy pale in comparison!
