5 Lessons from the Book of Habakkuk - Tony Evans
Habakkuk was a perplexed prophet who lived in the last days of the southern kingdom of Judah, before the Babylonians invaded it and took the people into captivity. The prophet struggled because God used the evil Babylonians to judge his people; in other words, he used the clearly unrighteous to judge the more righteous, and Habakkuk wrestled with whether God was fair for doing so. While we all struggle with this issue at times, the book of Habakkuk serves as an invitation to look at the “who” when we don’t understand the “why.” It prompts us to trust God’s sovereignty over his kingdom purposes even when we don’t comprehend them. Habakkuk invites us to draw near to God even when we don’t get all of our questions answered—and even when it seems that God is working against us! The book teaches that we can take our stand and praise God even when we don’t grasp what he’s doing. Habakkuk both encourages us with his doxology at the end of the book (3:16-19) and with his declaration, “The righteous one will live by his faith” (2:4). ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of Zechariah - Tony Evans
Zechariah’s prophetic book is filled with eschatological visions and symbols designed to show that God has a plan to bring about his kingdom through his coming Messiah. Zechariah called God’s people to be faithful while God demonstrated his faithfulness to them. The Messiah’s rule would come, but until then God’s people had to prepare themselves for it. Zechariah teaches that, while God’s promises are sure, the implementation of his kingdom program requires our involvement through repentance and obedience. Zechariah, whose name means “the Lord remembers,” called the people to remember God’s promises. He also reassured them that God would establish his rule on earth through the union of the roles of king and priest in the Messiah. And he would exercise these roles not only for Israel, but also for the whole world. Thus, although the people had been sent into captivity because of their rebellion, God had not forgotten them and would restore them if they would repent. Zechariah is also important for its prophetic accuracy, foretelling Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem hundreds of years before it occurred.
5 Lessons from the Book of Micah - Tony Evans
The message of Micah is that God is displeased with social injustice, declining morality, and living without a view to the Messiah’s kingdom reign. Micah wanted his own people in the southern kingdom of Judah to know that God was just as upset with them as he was with the rebellious northern kingdom of Israel. He condemned the social inequities of his day that did not reflect God’s kingdom principles that they were to be living out until the Messiah came. Those in power were practicing bribery, confiscating the fields of the people, oppressing the poor, and abusing women and children. They were disregarding the Mosaic law and its protections for the vulnerable. Personal holiness was also absent as the people lived in decadence. Micah directly connects the Messiah’s reign with the everyday living of his people. God would not ignore the people’s insensitivity, unrighteousness, and oppression. There is to be a direct connection between our faith and our social concerns. Micah’s message is that the spiritual must not become disconnected from the social. When the spiritual is applied to the social in righteous ways, God blesses. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of 1 Kings - Tony Evans
Written to the Jews living in captivity in Babylon, this two-volume work is a history of the united–and then divided–kingdom of Israel. The books describe the reigns of the kings of both Israel and Judah: there were nineteen kings in the northern kingdom (Israel) and twenty kings in the southern kingdom (Judah). The message of 1–2 Kings was the same message God gave to Moses in Deuteronomy: He would provide blessing for obedience to him and judgment for disobedience. The writer wanted his readers to know that they were in captivity because of disobedience, but obedience to God would bring deliverance. The prophetic ministries of Elijah, Elisha, and Isaiah are highlighted in these books, as these prophets called the people back to God so they could avoid the consequences of rebelling against their covenant with him. The sweep of history within these works, from David’s time through the broken kingdom era, shows us that no human ruler can fulfill God’s ultimate demands. It reveals humanity’s need for the ultimate King, the final Son of David, who alone could satisfy God’s requirements and bring his people deliverance. Reading 1–2 Kings causes us to look forward to the righteous kingdom rule of David’s final Son, the Messiah and our Savior. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of 1 Chronicles - Tony Evans
In these books, the chronicler records the history of the southern kingdom of Judah, focusing on the reigns of the Davidic kings, as well as giving attention to the priesthood. Thus, we see in these books the wedding of the kingship and the priesthood, with a focus on the temple as the place of God’s presence. The message of 1–2 Chronicles was one of hope for the readers, who were struggling in Babylonian exile. They were reminded that while God ruled over them as King, he also related to them through the priesthood. God’s rule over and relationship with his people are the key aspects of his kingdom identity with them. These books use the historical ups and downs of the kingdom of Judah to show the need for a leader who could perfectly fulfill the roles of king and priest. Ultimately, this would happen in the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, who would be both King and high priest. He rules us and rescues us. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher?
