5 Lessons from the Book of Nahum - Tony Evans
The book of Nahum is God’s announcement of judgment on the kingdom of Assyria, specifically on its capital city, Nineveh. God had used the Assyrians as the agents of judgment against his people for their rebellion and disobedience: Assyria had destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel and carried the inhabitants into captivity. But through Nahum, God was declaring that the cruel, evil Assyrian Empire would fall, too. The book also has a second purpose. The prophet wanted to assure God’s people that he would restore them according to his kingdom promises if they would repent and return to him. Though God had allowed Israel’s painful, crushing defeat because of their sin, he would not let his people’s sins cancel out his promises. Nahum’s name means “to console” or “consolation.” And through this prophet, God was consoling his people in the midst of their painful judgment and also letting Nineveh know that he would not ignore their evil. Nahum informs us that God is loving, yet he is also just. We must not allow one aspect of his character to cancel out the other in our minds. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of Jonah - Tony Evans
Jeroboam II. He was called by God to go to the wicked city of Nineveh and tell its people to repent. While it’s easy to miss the concern of this book by focusing on Jonah, it is really about the character of God. It begins with God and ends with God. He is the one who initiates all the action. The message of the book for Israel related to what was happening to Jonah. That message was that God loves all people, Jews and Gentiles. Though Israel’s sins put them in the same scenario for judgment that the Ninevites were in, Jonah showed the Israelites that God’s love is for all who repent. The book of Jonah, in fact, is a message of grace because God gave the Ninevites a forty-day window in which to repent. It reveals to us the heart of God to see people across all racial, social, class, and cultural lines repent and be saved. And our hearts should reflect the same desire. Jonah was a reluctant prophet who God used to teach us the kingdom perspective God’s people are to have toward all people. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of Zephaniah - Tony Evans
The theme of Zephaniah is the day of the Lord—a time of darkness, gloom, and pain as God’s response to people’s sin, whether that of unbelievers or that of his people. Nevertheless, the day of the Lord also has a positive side. It is a time of restoration after judgment, like the construction of new buildings in place of the condemned ones that were torn down. Zephaniah not only wrote about the day of the Lord in his time, but also about the day of the Lord yet to come in the seven-year tribulation at the end of history. Then, God will judge the world and prepare the nation of Israel for Christ’s second coming to establish his millennial kingdom. Today, we experience glimpses of the day of the Lord as he judges us for our sins, with the hope of restoration. Society at large will see it in the days to come as God judges the world for its rejection of Christ. The character of God demands that this day must come, so place yourself in a posture of repentance. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of Amos - Tony Evans
The prophecy of Amos was delivered to the people in the northern kingdom of Israel who appeared to be experiencing kingdom blessings. But God had a message for them: prosperity does not imply kingdom blessing when it is mixed with rebellion against him. Amos’s readers were actually living under God’s displeasure because they enjoyed the benefits of prosperity while ignoring the disenfranchised among them. They celebrated their affluence while being unjust to those who didn’t enjoy the same economic and social status. Amos was very direct in telling the people they could not enjoy kingdom benefits without living kingdom lives. God expects his people to be a blessing; we should not simply use his blessings for selfish indulgence. The people needed to learn that living under God’s kingdom rule was to be done in an obedient and generous way. Amos also prophesied about the day when a restored remnant of Israel would be the means through whom God would bring blessing to all people. Amos shows how God uses those living under his kingdom plan to accomplish his promises of blessing. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of Malachi - Tony Evans
Malachi is the in-your-face prophet who has one simple message: Take God seriously. The priests of his day were playing religious games, going through religious motions, and leading God’s people to worship casually. Malachi was called to confront God’s people with who he really is. When you understand who God is and how much he loves his people, you don’t treat him carelessly. God was insulted by the sloppy worship of Malachi’s time: people were bringing him animals for sacrifice that they wouldn’t serve to their human leaders. They didn’t esteem God as the great King that he is. Moreover, they were divorcing without cause because they didn’t take God’s covenant of marriage seriously, and they were robbing him of the tithes due to him. God’s people were acknowledging his name without engaging his person. As a result, things were falling apart. Locusts were destroying the agriculture. Yet, through it all, the people acted as if they’d done nothing wrong. The book of Malachi is a call to all of us that, while God is a loving Father, he is not to be taken lightly. His kingdom demands our total allegiance. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of Habakkuk - Tony Evans
Habakkuk was a perplexed prophet who lived in the last days of the southern kingdom of Judah, before the Babylonians invaded it and took the people into captivity. The prophet struggled because God used the evil Babylonians to judge his people; in other words, he used the clearly unrighteous to judge the more righteous, and Habakkuk wrestled with whether God was fair for doing so. While we all struggle with this issue at times, the book of Habakkuk serves as an invitation to look at the “who” when we don’t understand the “why.” It prompts us to trust God’s sovereignty over his kingdom purposes even when we don’t comprehend them. Habakkuk invites us to draw near to God even when we don’t get all of our questions answered—and even when it seems that God is working against us! The book teaches that we can take our stand and praise God even when we don’t grasp what he’s doing. Habakkuk both encourages us with his doxology at the end of the book (3:16-19) and with his declaration, “The righteous one will live by his faith” (2:4). ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of 1 Kings - Tony Evans
Written to the Jews living in captivity in Babylon, this two-volume work is a history of the united–and then divided–kingdom of Israel. The books describe the reigns of the kings of both Israel and Judah: there were nineteen kings in the northern kingdom (Israel) and twenty kings in the southern kingdom (Judah). The message of 1–2 Kings was the same message God gave to Moses in Deuteronomy: He would provide blessing for obedience to him and judgment for disobedience. The writer wanted his readers to know that they were in captivity because of disobedience, but obedience to God would bring deliverance. The prophetic ministries of Elijah, Elisha, and Isaiah are highlighted in these books, as these prophets called the people back to God so they could avoid the consequences of rebelling against their covenant with him. The sweep of history within these works, from David’s time through the broken kingdom era, shows us that no human ruler can fulfill God’s ultimate demands. It reveals humanity’s need for the ultimate King, the final Son of David, who alone could satisfy God’s requirements and bring his people deliverance. Reading 1–2 Kings causes us to look forward to the righteous kingdom rule of David’s final Son, the Messiah and our Savior. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher? 5 Lessons from the Book of 1 Chronicles - Tony Evans
In these books, the chronicler records the history of the southern kingdom of Judah, focusing on the reigns of the Davidic kings, as well as giving attention to the priesthood. Thus, we see in these books the wedding of the kingship and the priesthood, with a focus on the temple as the place of God’s presence. The message of 1–2 Chronicles was one of hope for the readers, who were struggling in Babylonian exile. They were reminded that while God ruled over them as King, he also related to them through the priesthood. God’s rule over and relationship with his people are the key aspects of his kingdom identity with them. These books use the historical ups and downs of the kingdom of Judah to show the need for a leader who could perfectly fulfill the roles of king and priest. Ultimately, this would happen in the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, who would be both King and high priest. He rules us and rescues us. ▶ Do you know Jesus as your Savior? https://tonyevans.org/know-jesus-christ/ ▶ Stream Sermons: https://tonyevans.org/podcast/ ▶▶ Free Sermon App: https://subsplash.com/tonyevans/app/ ▶▶ DONATE: https://give.tonyevans.org/the-alternative/donation ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtonyevans/ ▶ Are you a preacher?
